New Beginnings

Launched in April 2008, New Beginnings is RLTP's transistional jobs program. Designed for young adults, 18-28, who do not have their high school diploma or GED and are unemployed, New Beginnings helps the participants build structure in their lives, gain the soft skills necessary to be a succesful employee and develop a work history with references.

Participants attend GED class at our office 4 mornings per week. The fifth morning they will participate in job readiness/life skills workshop. Five afternoons a week the participants will work for Rochester Greenworx, our social enterprise.

Participants will be paid for all hours they work and they cannot work if they miss school.

We are working on launching the second phase of New Beginnings in the fall of 2009. In this component, participants who have passed the GED exam can work 40 hours per week for our deconstruction crew. Deconstruction is a green alternative to demolition. Participants learn how a building is built by taking it apart piece by piece. When participants are work ready we will help them find a job or enter an apprenticeship program.
